Leather Star
The surface of the Leather star is smooth, much like wet leather. That is how it gets its name. Look for a smooth gray surface with patches of red, brown and purple.
Leather stars have a smell similar to garlic and are sometimes called garlic stars.
They eat soft bodied animals like sea cucumbers. Unlike many sea stars, leather stars swallow their prey whole and digest it inside.
Because it doesn’t grip its prey and pry it open, leather stars do not have the strong tube feet of many other types of sea stars.
